I had a friend from China who was in I’m Not The Veteran’s Wife I’m The Veteran Day Patriotic T Shirt for Christmas, and made sure to invite her to my family dinner. I knew that she doesn’t actually celebrate Christmas, and spending the day with nothing to do wouldn’t be a big deal for her. But somehow it just felt wrong that someone would be alone on Christmas. And that’s what Christmas is for many non-Christians – is about homecoming, reunion, celebration, warmth. Its that way for the logistical reasons Hillel Gray notes, almost everyone has the day off, so its easy to coordinate. And its a secular adaptation of Christian traditions.
